Last night in Birmingham, my term-time home, there was a blackout for a few hours across almost the whole of the city. It was very eerie and some what apocalypse-ish - all the street lights and traffic lights were out and people were just roaming the streets trying to find out what had happened.
We lit candles and waited for the power to be restored. This only took a couple of hours but it made me think about how much we rely on electricity and how lucky we are especially now when much of NYC is still without power from Sandy.
